10 Stone Fox Hits of 1974

by David Montgomery-Blake | Aug 20, 2023 | Music

Know what a stone fox is? I was a kid in the 70s, so I wasn’t really hip to the lingo for hot girls. But when I was looking up the jive talk from the time, I couldn’t help myself. So here are 10 Stone Fox Hits of 1974. Celebrate these kick-ass women of the mid-1970s!

5. “Tell Me Something Good” – Rufus and Chaka Khan

From the funk guitar beginning to Chaka Khan’s slow delivery, “Tell Me Something Good” is classic, and dead sexy. Hearing how effortless her singing is in this song proves she is one of the best singers on the planet.

4. “Jolene” – Dolly Parton

No one can write a stone fox list about the 70s without including Dolly Parton. And she’s still going and kicking butt today. Which is a massive accomplishment for anyone in the music business. And Jolene is one hell of a song that nearly everyone knows.

3. “You’re No Good” – Lynda Ronstadt

This was one of my first Linda Ronstadt jams that I ever heard, and I fell instantly in love with it. The deep bluesy feel combined with her sultry vocals gives me goosebumps to this day.

2. “My Mistake was to Love You” – Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye

It’s no mistake that Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye made for musical gold when they teamed up. Their album Diana and Marvin was filled with their heady styles and sultry voices. Despite wishing to never do another male/female duet because he believed he would curse their careers, Motown got them together and created gold. The album creation and production was extremely difficult and taxing for both, but the album itself sounds absolutely stunning, bringing out the best of both performers, even if making it was an ordeal.

1. “Lady Marmalade” – LaBelle

Most children of the 00s recognize this from Moulin Rouge! (2001), but LaBelle performed it in 1974 perfectly. The trio blasted energy and exuberance as they rose up the charts with it.
