I love film comparisons in so many ways. The American remaking of French New Extremity is very interesting to me. But for some reason today, I was thinking of Breathless from 1983 with Richard Gere and Valérie Kaprisky, and it triggered so many strong vibes for me, especially on how the endings play out.
Between an Officer and a Gentleman, American Gigalo, and this movie, I think I may have seen more naked Richard Gere than I had probably expected to when I was young. Officer was a strong influence, but the scene where he and Valérie Kaprisky have sex in the shower in Breathless lives in my mind to this day. The shower doors breaking as they laugh was perfection.
Plus, I loved the weird stylishness of the film that I couldn’t put my finger on back in the day. The song and dance at the end stuck with me.
I watched the original film many years later and enjoyed it, but since the remake of it was my first experience of it, it holds a more prominent place in my mind.
Um, spoilers I guess for a film that is way old and another one that is way older…but which you may never have seen.
