I love horror, and I have read so much in my 50 years on this damn planet; some good and a lot bad. But Robert R. McCammon's novel Mine stands out because the key villain is highly deranged from PTSD and kidnaps a baby. And in the prologue, you see her melt a baby doll's face to a stove element to stop her from screaming and crying.

And that, right there, is terrifying. More than teens with supernatural powers onset by puberty or a demon malfeasance terrorizing whatever Randall is terrorizing in the Kingverse. So much more than McCammon's other horror stories which I absolutely love. Stinger, Swan Song, and Boy's Life are life blood to me. Just like that little-known author Stephen King or that doggie dad Dean R. Koontz is to me.

But, just like how Misery by Stephen King hit every horror note, Mine does that as well.
